For the musician, like any other trade, in fact in all of existence man in general blindly sought themselves listening to egoic opinions of others eventually crafting their own 'self-embracement'. That's the world of the ego and as a musician it gets quite sticky at times. Busyness of schedule, high profile jobs & well crafted skills can trigger it all so naturally well. Myself, well, I have my share of hurdles to do with the wrongheadedness of ego based opinion, including in my work ethic regardless of whether I am aware of it or not. Its not in the hard yards we give our best on, not in the artistic excellence we achieve for ourselves, or the high praises we receive for our work from others that is the root cause of ego driven lives. Its basically to do with a common pursuit of acceptance from fellow man to validate our own self assurance.
